Remember me

Unlike Tim Malone, I don’t need to tick the Remember Me checkbox (I’m too lazy too. I know it sounds crazy).

Still, it’s been a while since I have actually posted some form of a reasonable blog post as I have been busy doing various things.

For those that don’t know, I am doing volunteer work at 1WAY FM, ensuring that programs go out as they should, editing programs and doing web and graphic design work for them. This does take a bit of my time up.

I also recently relaunched kjwdesign’s website (although I need to change a bit of code so that I don’t have an issue with the blog showing on the front page). The new design is fresher, gives me a bit more control on what I can put up on the site and includes a blog where I can easily add news and updates on the business. I also had to fix the contact form as the web-host somehow broke the PHP configuration for the SMTP server address.

Other than that, I am job hunting at the moment, looking at ways and options to start a production business, still working in retail, and still slowly working on actually getting my showcase on the web.

I also graduated from CIT a couple of weeks ago.

Firefox download day

Today is Firefox download day. Get your copy of Firefox from the Firefox 3 website and help Mozilla set a world record.

I have tried the past release candidate on one of my Mac’s and have found it to be quite an improvement in speed and design.

When things gone wrong….

As some may have noticed, email and access to this website would have not been working last Wednesday morning. This was due to a network hardware problem that occurred in my hosts ACT data-centre (see http://status.aussiehq.com.au/item/2025.html for the explanation).

Now with most hosts, this and other networking issues occurs only once in a while (some hosts though are worse (see the Whirlpool Forums for posts on these) and some are unlikely (Dreamhost has had unfortunate issues in the past)).

Now the biggest thing, and something that I guess isn’t thought of, is what happens if there is an explosion and fire in the power room of a data-centre.

Usually if there is a power issue (eg. no power to the grid), backup generators kick in. Unfortunately, for ‘The Planet’, they had a short that caused their power room in one of their data-centre’s to catch fire and explode (thankfully for them, not causing any damage to other infrastructure including servers). At least they are keeping updates on their forums about the issue, something that some other hosts rarely do.

Wordpress 2.5

The blog has been updated, so if you have any issues, please post in the comments.

All I can say is that I like the latest version (although I wonder how to get the Gravatar’s actually showing (See my first photo of the week post’s comments)).

Also, the folks at WordPress have updated the WordPress.org website to have a similar style to the Wordpress 2.5 admin interface. Well done to the folks at WordPress and Happy Cog for the work done on the design (Even if it will take a bit of getting used to).

WordPress 2.5 RC1

The good folks at WordPress have released some screenshots as well as RC1 of the next revision of WordPress.
A part of the next version involves a redesign of the administration section. The admin section doesn’t look that pretty in the current form. The next version freshen’s the look as well as improving some of the key design elements.

I might post some screenshots/a review on the RC sometime in the near future (that is if they don’t release the final version before I get to the review).
